Your pond filter is the most important piece of equipment in your pond - it removes harmful waste, maintains water quality and keeps your fish and plants healthy. But filters themselves need regular cleaning and maintenance to work properly. A blocked or poorly maintained filter can quickly lead to poor water quality, algae blooms, fish stress and even fish losses. Our pond filter maintenance service covers all types of filtration systems - box filters, multi-chamber filters, pressurised filters and UVCs. We clean, inspect and optimise your filtration to ensure it is working as efficiently as possible. Available across Essex, Kent, Greater London and Hertfordshire.

Frequently Asked Questions
How often should a pond filter be cleaned?
Most pond filters benefit from a service every 6–12 weeks during the active season (spring to autumn). In winter, fish are less active and filters can be turned down or, for some filter types, switched off. We can advise the right frequency for your specific system.
Will cleaning my filter kill the good bacteria?
This is a common concern. The key is to clean filter media in pond water - not tap water, which contains chlorine that kills beneficial bacteria. We always rinse media in the pond water we remove during servicing, preserving as much beneficial bacteria as possible.
My pond water is green - is this a filter problem?
Green water is caused by suspended algae, and is often a sign the filter is struggling to keep up. It can be caused by a dirty or undersized filter, a failing UV clarifier, or an imbalance in water chemistry. We can diagnose the cause and resolve it.
My filter is very old - should I replace it?
Older filters can often be serviced and kept running, but if the filter is undersized for your current fish stock, or the housing is cracked and leaking, replacement may be the more cost-effective long-term solution. We will always give you an honest assessment.
How do I know if my pond filter is the right size for my fish?
As a rule of thumb, a filter should be rated for at least the full volume of your pond - and double that for koi ponds. If you've added more fish since installing the filter, or have goldfish that have grown considerably, your filter may now be undersized. We can assess your system during any visit and recommend an upgrade if needed.
When should I replace my UV clarifier bulb?
UV bulbs should be replaced every 12 months, even if they still appear to glow. The UV-C output that kills algae cells degrades significantly after this point, even though the bulb looks lit. A failing UV bulb is the single most common reason ponds suddenly develop persistent green water problems in spring.
What does a pond filter service include?
Our filter service includes a full strip-down and inspection, cleaning of mechanical filter foam, careful rinsing of biological media in pond water (to preserve bacteria), UV bulb and sleeve check, pump flow rate test, and a full reassembly with a performance check. We'll also inspect all hose connections and fittings for leaks while we're there.
